# Why Fiberglass Fabric?

[Canonical HTML page](https://jpscm.com/resources/why-fiberglass)

Fiberglass properties provide design opportunities for lightweight, cost-efficient composite products.

## Key fiberglass properties

### Chemical resistance

Inorganic glass fibers resist rot, mildew, and most acids. Hydrofluoric acid and hot phosphoric acid are exceptions.

### Dimensional stability

Glass yarns resist atmospheric stretching and shrinkage. Nominal elongation at break is 3 to 4%.

### Thermal properties

Low thermal expansion and relatively high thermal conductivity help glass fabrics dissipate heat.

### Tensile strength

A high strength-to-weight ratio supports unidirectional or bidirectional fabric design.

### Thermal endurance

Inorganic glass fibers do not burn and withstand industrial baking and curing temperatures.

### Low moisture absorption

Noncellular glass fibers absorb very little moisture.

### Electrical insulation

High dielectric strength, low water absorption, and temperature resistance support electrical insulation.

### Product flexibility

Yarn sizes, weave types, and finishes accommodate many industrial applications.

### Cost

Glass fabrics compare favorably in cost with synthetic and natural fiber fabrics.

## Fabric selection

Consider thickness, weight, construction, yarn size, and finish. Consult a JPS technical or sales representative before choosing a fabric for your application.
